Tritons Finish Tourney with Victory

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The University of California San Diego women's volleyball team concluded play at the Seawolf Invitational Saturday by splitting a pair of matches, defeating host Alaska Anchorage in four sets after dropping a five set decision to Biola at the Alaska Airlines Center.

Scores against UAA went 18-25, 25-16, 25-19, and 25-20 with the victory moving UC San Diego to an even 2-2 on the young season.

"After losing the first set against Alaska, it was great to see that we could be so resilient and come back with a four set win versus a top team," said UC San Diego head coach Ricci Luyties. "We had some good performances by many players. It was truly a team effort with everyone making plays to help us get the victory."

Sydney Tekstra paced the Tritons with 14 points that included 13 kills and two block assists. She also added 12 digs. Claudia Mathews tallied 11 kills and five blocks, while Trinity Castaneda had 10 kills and Jessica Rieble finished with five stuffs. Mathews hit a stellar .524 with no errors in 21 attack attempts. Susanna Limb had a match-best 16 digs and collected 23 assists.

As a team, UC San Diego hit .223 (57-24-148) and held a 74-59 advantage in digs (74-59).

Eve Stephens had a match-best 16 kills for the Seawolves, who hit .143 (41-20-147).

Set scores in the day's earlier match against Biola were 25-18, 17-25, 20-25, 26-24, and 15-10.

Rieble had 13 kills and Tekstra added 10. Libero Alyson Penrose led the Tritons defensively with 23 digs. Gina Cortesi logged seven kills, 17 digs, three service aces, and four blocks.

The Eagles had 13 blocks in their win. 

Tekstra was named to the all-tournament team for her performances over four matches in Alaska.

UC San Diego returns to Southern California to host the West Region Showcase Sept. 12-14 at RIMAC Arena. Along with the Tritons, the six team tournament also includes Academy of Art, Chico State, Concordia Irvine, Montana State Billings, and Saint Martin's.
