Attack Woes Lead to 3-0 Loss at Cal State LA

LOS ANGELES - A lackluster offense by the University of California San Diego women's volleyball team led to a 3-0 loss at Cal State LA Tuesday night at University Gym. Set scores were 25-23, 25-13, and 25-21 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) contest.

UC San Diego hit just .076, its second lowest of the season, with 29 kills and 22 errors in 92 attack attempts.

Jessica Rieble led the Tritons with 9.5 points on six kills, five block assists, and a service ace. Gina Cortesi followed with 7.5 points on seven kills and a block assist while adding six digs. Emily Hubbard and Sydney Tekstra each contributed five kills. Hubbard and setter Isabela Dobra both had seven digs.

The Tritons led for most of the opening set. At 23-19, the Golden Eagles rattled off six consecutive points to take a 1-0 lead. With Cal State LA ahead 7-6 in the second set, the Eagles out-scored the Tritons 18-7 the rest of the way. UC San Diego made a valiant comeback bid in the third frame. Trailing 20-14, the Tritons captured six straight points to tie it up, two of those coming off kills by Hubbard. However, Cal State LA came right back to score three consecutive times and win five of the final six points of the match.

Alejandra Negron paced the Golden Eagles with nine kills, while Jeshmarie Suarez had 13 digs. Cal State LA hit .237 (38-16-93) with a 6-1 lead in aces and a 9-7 advantage in blocks.

The Tritons fell to 10-5 overall and 4-3 in the CCAA. Cal State LA, which is receiving votes in this week's national poll, upped its marks to 9-5 and 5-1.

UC San Diego continues its three match week Friday at Cal Poly Pomona (4-10, 2-5). On Saturday, Oct. 12, the Tritons host undefeated Cal State San Bernardino (14-0, 7-0), the No. 1 ranked team in the nation, at RIMAC Arena (7 p.m.).
