INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The 4th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team was awarded the No. 2 seed in the NCAA West Regional tournament which will be held Nov. 19-21 in San Bernardino, Calif. UCSD finished in second-place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and an overall record of 28-2 and will face the No. 7 seeded San Francisco State Gators on Thursday. UCSD and SFSU split its two conference matches this season as the Tritons swept the Gators in RIMAC but lost to SFSU in San Francisco.
This will be UCSD's fourth trip to the NCAA tournament in the last five season's under head coach Tom Black. In 2006, the Tritons won the NCAA West Regional tournament at Cal State San Bernardino. In 2007, the Tritons advanced to the West Regional semifinal match and in 2008, UCSD dropped a first-round five-set match to Cal State L.A.
UCSD's 28 wins is the most since the 2004 season when the Tritons won 30 matches and reached the West Regional final.
Match times will be set on Monday as the Tritons will be joined by No. 1 Cal State San Bernardino, No. 3 Sonoma State, No. 4 Hawaii Hilo, No. 5 Alaska Anchorage, No. 6 Cal State L.A. and No. 8 Seattle Pacific.
In addition to splitting with SFSU, the Tritons split with Cal State San Bernardino, defeated Sonoma State and Cal State L.A. twice each, and defeated Alaska Anchorage at the Triton Invitational. UCSD has not faced Seattle Pacific or Hawaii Hilo this season.
