Season-Best Hitting Percentage Leads to Sweep Over Cal State Dominguez Hills

LA JOLLA, Calif. - A season-high hitting percentage led the University of California San Diego women's volleyball team to a 3-0 blanking of conference opponent Cal State Dominguez Hills Tuesday night at RIMAC Arena.

Scores of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) match went 25-21, 25-16, and 25-21. UC San Diego, which snapped a four-match losing slide, improved to 6-8 overall and 2-6 in the league. Cal State Dominguez Hills dropped to 5-11 on the season and stayed winless in CCAA contests at 0-8.

The Tritons posted a .353 attack percentage with 43 kills and only seven errors in 102 attempts. It was their best since swinging .360 against Cal State Monterey Bay in October of 2016.

Two Tritons amassed at least 10 kills without committing an attack error. Middle blocker Jessica Rieble hit .714 with 10 kills in 14 attempts, while outside hitter Cindy Tran finished at .480 with 12 kills in 25 attempts. Tran racked up a team-best 15.5 points by adding two aces and three block assists while notching her third double-double by also getting a team-high 13 digs.

Freshman setter Brie Severino (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS) also had a good night with 31 assists while hitting .833 with five kills in six tries. Middle Allison Tiegs hit .500 (4-1-6).

The Toros got 15 kills from Tati Yandall and 16 digs from Marissa Weber, both of those match-highs. As a team, they hit .147 (38-21-116).

UC San Diego hosts two big matches later this week, including national No. 1 Cal State San Bernardino Friday and 24th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona Saturday. Friday will be the annual Dig for a Cure match in support of breast cancer awareness, while Saturday is the sixth annual Reis Cup in rememberance of former Triton Karen Reis. Both matches are scheduled for 7 p.m. and UC San Diego students are admitted free.
