IRVINE, Calif. - The 16th-ranked University of California San Diego women’s water polo suffered a 19-3 loss to No. 3 UCLA at the first day of the 2017 Barbara Kalbus Invitational at Irvine, Friday afternoon.
UC San Diego falls to 4-6 on the season while the Bruins move to 9-0 overall.
Freshman goalkeeper Reilly Gallagher notched seven saves in the loss while senior Alexis Wieseler, senior Lauren Boyer and Chanel Schilling each tallied a goal. Boyer was also credited with a steal and senior Lani Little earned an assist.
The Bruins jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Boyer buried one home to make it 3-1. UCLA put away three more goals before the end of the quarter to lead 6-.1
The Tritons were shut out in the second quarter while UCLA put away five goals. UCSD trailed 11-1 at the half.
After UCLA scored three more to open the third quarter, Wieseler found the back of the net to make is a 14-2 game.
Schilling opened up the fourth frame with a goal for UCSD; however, UCLA notched two more goals in the quarter to cruse to a 16-goal victory.
The Bruins’ Lizette Roseboom led UCLA in scoring with four goals while Rachel Fattal tallied three. Carlee Kapana collected eight saves in goal.
UCSD will return to action Saturday, Feb. 25 at 11:45 a.m. for the second day of competition at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational, against 12th-ranked crosstown rival San Diego State. The Tritons would then play again at 4 p.m. if they lose to the Aztecs, or 5:15 p.m. if they win that contest. Both of UCSD's games on Saturday will take place at Corona del Mar High School in Newport Beach.
