NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - The 16th-ranked University of California San Diego women’s water polo opened the second day of the Barbara Kalbus Invite with an upset over No. 12 San Diego State, 10-1. UC San Diego fell to 11th-ranked Pacific 11-5 in the second game.
With the split, UCSD moves to 5-7 overall and 1-2 on the weekend. SDSU falls to 5-6 overall and UOP holds a 7-5 record on the season.
UCSD shut out crosstown rival SDSU in three quarters of play, holding the Aztecs to a single goal to secure a 10-1 victory. Senior Lauren Boyer completed her fourth hat trick of the season and led the Tritons with five goals.
UCSD buried two goals in the first quarter to take an early 2-0 lead. Boyer found the back of the net with just under five minutes left in the quarter before senior Alexis Wieseler put away the second goal two minutes later.
Freshman Jessee Ransone opened up the second quarter with a goal to give UCSD a 3-0 lead. The Aztecs answered with their only goal of the game during a six-on-five situation. Kayla Fedler and Lani Tittle each found the back of the net in the final minutes of the half to give the Tritons a four-goal lead.
UCSD notched two goals in the third quarter to take a 7-1 advantage. Boyer added her second goal of the day with 4:33 showing on the clock before Tittle scored on a power play.
Boyer scored all three of UCSD’s goals in the fourth frame as the Tritons cruised to a nine-goal victory.
"I was very proud of how we came together to beat SDSU after losing to them two weeks ago," said head coach Brad Kreutzkamp. "I was impressed with how we played against them."
The Tritons suffered an 11-5 loss after UOP outscored UCSD 6-2 in the second half.
The Tigers scored first but UCSD was quick to answer with a goal from Boyer in the first frame. UOP scored two more before Fedler buried one to make it a 3-2 game at the end of the quarter.
UOP opened up the second frame with two goals to take a three-goal advantage, however, the Tritons answered when Wieseler found the back of the net to make it a 5-3 game at the half.
Tittle scored UCSD’s only goal of the third quarter while the Tigers scored three to extend their lead by four.
Boyer earned her second goal of the game in the fourth frame however it wasn’t enough as UOP cruised to a six-goal victory.
Gallagher made four saves in goal while the Tigers’ Alexis Hollinrake tallied 11 saves.
"It was unfortunate that we couldn't rebound and play as well as we did in the first game," Kreutzkamp said. "However, the team is in good spirits and we are looking forward to playing UC Santa Barbara tomorrow."
UCSD will return to the pool for the final day of competition at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational. The Tritons will face No. 9 UC Santa Barbara at 11:30 a.m. at Corona del Mar High School in Newport Beach.
