HAYWARD, Calif. - Senior center Lauren Boyer recorded her eighth hat trick of the season, with a game-high five goals as the 19th-ranked University of California San Diego women’s water polo team defeated Cal State East Bay, 13-8, in Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) action, Monday afternoon in Hayward.
With the win, UC San Diego improves to 14-12 on the season and 3-0 in the WWPA. CSUEB drops to 10-11 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Junior Kayla Fedler tallied two goals for UCSD while Colleen Ratcliff, Alexis Wieseler, Lani Little, Shelby Stender, Krista Schneider and Chanel Schilling each added one. As a team, the Tritons amassed 14 steals. Freshman goalkeeper Reilly Gallagher had five saves and two steals.
Alicia Tully led the Pioneers’ with four goals and two steals. Nikki Vaughan made 11 saves in goal and also grabbed three steals.
UCSD jumped out to a quick start, scoring four unanswered goals to take a 4-0 lead in the first quarter. The Pioneers’ Leilani Vazquez found the back of the net to put CSUEB on the board. With six seconds remaining in the frame, Fedler scored on a powerplay to make it a 5-1 game.
The Pioneers opened up the second frame with a goal from Tully before Wieseler scored on a penalty shot. Tully notched another goal in the quarter, however, Tittle found Schneider for a UCSD goal to make it a 7-3 game at the half.
The second half was a back-and-forth battle between both teams as the Tritons held a slim 6-5 advantage in goals.
Boyer netted back-to-back scores in the third frame while Stender added two assists. In the final quarter, Boyer put away two goals, scoring unassisted before capitalizing on a six-on-five opportunity.
CSUEB notched three goals in the frame but it wasn’t enough as the Tritons walked away with their fourth-straight win.
UCSD will return home to host Hartwick for a non-conference game set to start at 6:00 p.m. at Canyonview Aquatic Center.
