Lauren Boyer Named Player of the Year; Seven Tritons Earn WWPA Honors

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - Lauren Boyer of the University of California San Diego women's water polo team has been named the 2017 Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Player of the Year. Additionally, six other Tritons garnered honors from the conference.

It is the fifth straight year UC San Diego has earned the WWPA Player of the Year award after Sarah Lizotte was named in 2013 and 2014, Courtney Miller was recognized in 2015 and Laurel Kistler received the honor last season.

UCSD placed a league-best seven players on the all-conference teams, including two first-team selections.

Boyer, a senior center, took home her fourth All-WWPA award after earning Newcomer of the Year and All-Freshman Team accolades in 2014, honorable mention in 2015 and second-team honors in 2016.

The Honolulu, Hawaii, native led the WWPA in goals (71) and points (81). She had a team-high 13 five-meter penalties drawn and 11 hat tricks this season to go along with 11 assists, 30 steals, 51 ejections drawn and nine field blocks.

Joining Boyer on the All-WWPA First Team is senior two-meter defender Alexis Wieseler. Freshman goalie Reilly Gallagher and sophomore Chanel Schilling earned second-team distinctions, while Gallagher was also placed on the All-Freshman Team. Sophomore attacker Krista Schneider and senior two-meter defender Lani Tittle gained honorable mentions. In addition, freshman Jessee Ransone joined Gallagher on the All-Freshman Team.

Wieseler was second in the conference in goals (57), points (79) and steals (53). She also led UCSD with five penalty shots made and is second on the team with nine hat tricks. It is the fourth time the Highland native has been named All-WWPA.

Gallagher led the conference with a 7.09 goals against average, compiling 208 saves for a .485 save percentage. Schilling a sophomore center, notched her second conference honor after grabbing a team-high 63 ejections drawn to go along with 33 goals, 15 assists and seven steals.

Tittle picked up her third honorable mention, leading the Tritons in field blocks (18) while Schneider amassed a WWPA-high 42 assists.

In her first season with UCSD, Ransone tallied 10 goals, 22 assists and 30 steals.

UC San Diego will go for its fifth straight conference tittle at the WWPA Championship, Friday to Sunday, April 28-30. The top-seeded Tritons have a first-round bye and will play the winner of No. 4 Cal State Monterey Bay and No. 5 Mercyhurst on Saturday, April 29, at 10:45 a.m. (PT).
