Tritons Split Again on Final Day of Action at Cross Conference Challenge
TEMPE, Ariz. - On the final day of action at the Cross Conference Challenge Sunday, the No. 16 University of California San Diego women's water polo team defeated No. 21 Loyola Marymount, 5-3, before falling to host and fifth-ranked Arizona State, 12-5.
The Tritons finished the tournament with a 2-2 record and are now 3-5 on the season.
Senior Kayla Fedler scored twice to lead UCSD in the win over LMU. Her power play goal at the 4:13 mark of the first quarter led off the scoring. The Lions also netted their first goal of the game in the opening quarter to even the score at 1-1.
From there, the Tritons exploded for three consecutive goals. Sophomore Jessee Ransone scored the lone goal of the second period to put UCSD up 2-1 heading into the intermission. Back-to-back third quarter strikes by junior Shelby Stender and freshman Taylor Onstott (Carlsbad/Carlsbad HS) cushioned the Tritons' lead to 4-1.
Loyola Marymount found the back of the net twice in the final period, the first at 4:13 and the second with just 41 seconds remaining. Between those goals, Fedler notched her second of the contest at 2:03.
Two of LMU's three goals came during power play situations.
Claire Wright made 11 stops in goal for the Lions, who fell to 4-6 with the loss.
Five different Tritons scored against Arizona State, including junior Halley Atkinson (Escondido/Mission Hills HS), freshman Ciara Franke (San Diego/La Jolla HS), Onstott, junior Krista Schneider, and Stender.
The Sun Devils scored the bulk of their goals in the first half and held an 8-1 lead after two quarters of play. UC San Diego rallied for two goals in each of the third and fourth periods, but it wasn't enough.
Bugelli had three saves and Gallagher finished with one.
ASU, which improved to 6-1 with the victory, got three goals from Maud Koopman. Starting keeper Mia Rycraw made nine stops in net.
Both teams were 4-for-5 on power play opportunities and both finished with 27 total shots.
Saturday in Tempe, UCSD defeated No. 20 Princeton (6-4) and lost to No. 6 Hawai'i (7-4).
Over the four games, Onstott led the Tritons with five goals. Fedler, Schneider, and Stender had three apiece, while Franke and freshman Grace Pevehouse each had a pair. Atkinson and Ransone rounded out UCSD's scoring with one goal apiece. Bugelli recorded 26 saves and Gallagher had 14.
