LA JOLLA, Calif. - Chanel Schilling scored four goals as the 13th-ranked University of California San Diego women's water polo team rolled to a 16-3, non-conference win against No. 24 California Baptist Saturday afternoon at Canyonview Aquatic Center.
UC San Diego evened its season record to 7-7, while California Baptist dropped to 4-6.
Schilling was one of 10 Tritons to find the back of the net. Junior Carly Innis and freshmen Taylor Onstott (Carlsbad/Carlsbad HS) and Grace Pevehouse tallied two goals apiece. Also getting in on the action were senior Kayla Fedler, juniors Riley Heiduk, Shelby Stender, and Maddy Wieseler, and freshmen Robyn Carter (San Diego/The Bishop's School) and Tera Richardson.
Stender also assisted on three goals, while sophomore Jessee Ransone had a pair of assists.
All three UCSD goalies saw playing time. Freshman Bennett Bugelli (La Jolla/La Jolla HS) started and made three saves over two full quarters. Sophomore Reilly Gallagher stopped four CBU bids in the third quarter, and classmate Tori Rainone had two saves in the fourth frame.
Two goals were scored in the first minute of the game. Just 30 seconds in, Stender gave the Tritons a 1-0 lead with a power play goal. The Lancers answered quickly and tied it up at 7:08 on a goal by Amy Branch. However, UC San Diego scored the next eight goals of the contest and held a commanding, 9-2 advantage at halftime.
Schilling recorded a hat trick before the intermission, while Onstott and Pevehouse both scored twice in the first half.
The Tritons tacked on seven more goals in the second stanza while holding the Lancers to just one. Innis had back-to-back scores in the fourth quarter.
UCSD converted four of six power play opportunities and out-shot its opponent 32-21. The 13-goal spread was the largest margin of victory for the Tritons this season.
Grace Ramirez made 11 saves in goal for California Baptist.
Next up, UC San Diego travels to UC Irvine's Barbara Kalbus Invitational, which runs Feb. 23-25. The Tritons open against sixth-ranked Arizona State on Feb. 23 at 3 p.m. The match will be played at Corona del Mar High School.
