No. 15 UC San Diego Sweeps Two Games at Barbara Kalbus Invite on Saturday

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — The No. 15 University of California San Diego women’s water polo team swept two games at UC Irvine’s Barbara Kalbus Invitational on Saturday at Corona del Mar High School.

The Tritons defeated No. 18 San Jose State, 9-6, in the first game of the day before knocking off No. 11 Loyola Marymount, 7-5, late in the afternoon.

UC San Diego (9-8, 1-0 WWPA) has now won four of its last five games and has defeated six ranked opponents this season, including LMU twice.

Game 1

Freshman Taylor Onstott scored three goals with an assist to lift the Tritons to a victory over No. 18 San Jose State, 9-6, on Saturday morning.

Junior Krista Schneider finished with a goal, three assists and two steals, while senior Kayla Fedler added two goals. Sophomore Reilly Gallagher played all four quarters in the net, tallying seven saves and three steals.

The Tritons raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter and led at halftime, 5-3. UCSD scored three goals in the fourth period to cruise to the victory.

Game 2

Fedler and Onstott scored two goals apiece as UC San Diego defeated No. 11 Loyola Marymount, 7-5, on Saturday evening.

Freshman Grace Pevehouse tallied five steals, freshman Ciara Franke recorded four steals and Schneider finished with two assists. In addition, Gallagher had eight saves in the net.

The Tritons scored two goals in both the first and second quarters, then added two more in the fourth period to hold on for the victory.

UC San Diego concludes tournament play with the ninth-place game against No. 9-ranked Michigan beginning at 1 p.m.
