No. 15 UC San Diego Drops Thrilling Game to No. 9 Michigan, 10-9
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - The No. 15 University of California San Diego women’s water polo team suffered a narrow defeat to No. 9 Michigan, 10-9, in the ninth-place game at Corona del Mar High School's Marian Bergeson Aquatic Center on the final day of the UC Irvine Barbara Kalbus Invitational on Sunday.
Junior Krista Schneider and freshman Ciara Franke scored two goals apiece for UC San Diego (9-9), which finished 2-2 in the three-day tournament with its only losses against two teams ranked in the top 10.
The Tritons jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after goals by Schneider, senior Kayla Fedler and junior Chanel Schilling, before taking a 7-6 advantage into halftime. Franke’s goal midway through the third period put UC San Diego ahead, 8-6, and after Michigan rallied to take a one-point lead, a goal by freshman Grace Pevehouse knotted the score, 9-9, to close the third.
The only goal in the fourth quarter came from Wolverines junior Julia Sellers with 3:48 remaining.
UC San Diego returns to action next weekend at the Claremont Convergence hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The four-game invitational begins with a matchup against California Baptist on Friday, March 2, beginning at 3 p.m.
