Schilling's Three Goals Lift No. 11 UC San Diego Past Cal State Monterey Bay, 15-3
LA JOLLA, Calif. — Junior Chanel Schilling scored three goals to lift the No. 11 University of California San Diego women’s water polo team to an impressive victory over Cal State Monterey Bay, 15-3, on Sunday afternoon at Canyonview Aquatic Center.
Freshman Robyn Carter, freshman Sydney Boland, junior Carly Innis and senior Kayla Fedler added two goals apiece for the Tritons, who won for the ninth time in their last 10 games. Junior Krista Schneider tallied two assists, Innis recorded three steals and sophomore goalkeeper Reilly Gallagher finished with three saves and two steals.
Sunday’s contest was the Tritons' first game in two weeks after taking last weekend off for final exams.
“We just came out there and did what we had to do,” said Schilling, who now has 22 goals this season. “We’re coming off a break for finals, so we haven’t been practicing as much.
“It was a good win to get us started before we get into some more games.”
After falling behind to start the game, UC San Diego (18-10, 3-0 WWPA) strung together four-straight goals to take a 4-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Tritons added five more in the second to take a 9-2 advantage into halftime.
Junior Maddy Wieseler got UC San Diego on the scoreboard before Innis, Fedler and junior Halley Atkinson added goals in the first period. Carter’s goal early in the second quarter pushed the Tritons’ lead to 5-1 with 6:36 left in the first half, before Schilling scored twice in the period to help build a comfortable halftime lead.
Morgan Tucker scored two goals to lead Cal State Monterey Bay (4-16, 0-4).
UC San Diego returns to action next weekend, as the Tritons head north to face Fresno Pacific on March 30 before taking on Fresno State on March 31.
