OAKLAND, Calif. — University of California San Diego freshman Ciara Franke (San Diego/La Jolla HS) has been named Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Player of the Week, the conference announced on Wednesday.
It’s the first-career honor for Franke, and the third player of the week award for the Tritons this season. Fellow freshmen Taylor Onstott (Feb. 14) and Grace Pevehouse (March 14) have also received the accolade in 2018.
Franke recorded six goals with four steals in two UC San Diego road victories over the weekend, including the game-winning goal against Fresno State on March 31.
The San Diego native scored three first-half goals in a WWPA win against Fresno Pacific, 15-3, on March 30, and followed it up one day later by scoring three late goals in a furious Triton comeback victory over Fresno State, 13-11.
Franke scored all three of her goals in the fourth quarter against Fresno State, tying the score with 5:54 left in the game before putting the Tritons ahead for good, 12-11, with 3:45 remaining. The freshman capped off the scoring flurry with one final goal with 2:41 to go, putting UC San Diego in front by two.
This season, Franke has tallied a team-high 55 steals along with 31 points on 24 goals and seven assists.
No. 11-ranked UC San Diego (20-10, 4-0 WWPA) resumes action next weekend when the Tritons hit the road for a showdown against No. 7 UC Irvine on Friday, April 13 beginning at 7 p.m.
