Champs Again! No. 12 Tritons Top Cal State East Bay for Sixth Straight WWPA Title

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The No. 12-ranked University of California San Diego women's water polo team defeated Cal State East Bay in the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Championship title game, 12-2, on Sunday afternoon at Canyonview Aquatic Center.

Goalkeeper Bennett Bugelli (La Jolla/La Jolla HS) recorded five saves in the second half without allowing a goal en route to being named WWPA Championship MVP, while fellow freshman Taylor Onstott (Carlsbad/Carlsbad HS) scored three goals with three steals and sophomore Jessee Ransone tallied three assists to both earn a place on the All-Tournament First Team.

The Tritons won the WWPA Championship tournament for the sixth straight season and for the seventh time in the last eight years. They again earn the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Championship. In addition, ninth-year head coach Brad Kreutzkamp won his 200th career game.

"It doesn't get old," said Kreutzkamp. "It doesn't. We weren't going to take this opportunity for granted, and we were going to come out and play the best game we possibly could. We know that East Bay has a lot of firepower offensively, and we were going to focus on our defense. I thought Bennett (Bugelli) and Reilly (Gallagher) did a fantastic job in the cage."

UC San Diego took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter after goals by Onstott, junior Krista Schneider and senior Kayla Fedler. After consecutive Cal State East Bay goals in the second period to pull within one, Onstott took over with two scores of her own to extend the Tritons' halftime lead to 5-2.

From there, UC San Diego outscored Cal State East Bay 7-0 in the second half, as six different Tritons scored a goal to cruise to their eighth win in their last nine games.

After what was likely her final home appearance, captain Fedler was selected to the All-Tournament Second Team. Sophomore goalkeeper Reilly Gallagher made a pair of saves in the first half before Bugelli took over.

UC San Diego (24-11) now awaits its opening-round opponent for the 2018 NCAA Championship. The selection show airs live on on Monday, April 30, beginning at 5 p.m. PT.
