HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. — University of California San Diego water polo coaches Brad Kreutzkamp and Matt Ustaszewski have each earned 2018 Zone Award honors from USA Water Polo, the association recently announced.

Kreutzkamp, the UC San Diego women’s head coach, received the Sandy Nitta Distinguished Coaching Award for the Pacific Southwest Zone. Ustaszewski, the UC San Diego men’s associate head coach, garnered the Monte Nitzkowski Distinguished Coaching Award for the Pacific Southwest Zone.

In addition to their duties with UC San Diego, both are also affiliated with Sunset San Diego Water Polo Club.

The winners represent zones from all across the country, honoring contributions in a variety of areas including coaching, officiating, volunteering, masters water polo and more.

The zone award winners are eligible to receive USA Water Polo National Awards, which will be announced at the USA Water Polo Assembly held Jan. 26-27 at the Renaissance Newport Beach Hotel.

The General Assembly is a meeting where all individuals, organization members and other constituencies in the USA Water Polo family gather to learn, ask questions and network with others.

Kreutzkamp is set to lead the UC San Diego women’s water polo team in its upcoming 2019 season, as the Tritons attempt to win the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) championship for the seventh-consecutive season.

UC San Diego finished 24-12 overall in 2018, reaching the National Collegiate Water Polo Championship Opening Round against Wagner.

Ustaszewski and the Triton men’s team recently wrapped up one of the best seasons in program history, winning the WWPA Championship en route to advancing to the NCAA Semifinals against Stanford and finishing No. 5 in the country.

It was the third time in the last five season UC San Diego (20-6), won the WWPA Championship and reached the national semifinals. The Tritons also won 20 games for the first time since 2008 with their second-best winning percentage (.769) in program history.
