No. 20 UC San Diego Splits Two on Opening Day of Triton Invitational
LA JOLLA, Calif. — The No. 20 University of California San Diego women's water polo team split two contests on the opening day of the 2019 Triton Invitational Saturday at Canyonview Aquatic Center.
UC San Diego (2-5) opened the tournament with a close, last-second loss to No. 7 UC Santa Barbara, 4-3, before defeating Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) foe Cal State East Bay, 15-4.

Six different Tritons scored two goals apiece in the win against Cal State East Bay (2-2), including senior Carly Innis, sophomore Tera Richardson, junior Jessee Ransone, sophomore Ciara Franke, sophomore Grace Pevehouse and freshman Lizzie Hansen. It was Hansen's first two career-goals, while fellow freshman Chloe Pena also recorded her first-career score.
The Tritons outscored the Pioneers 5-1 in the first quarter and at halftime, 8-2.

The Tritons had a 3-1 halftime advantage against the No. 7-ranked team in the nation, but were unable to hold off the Gauchos' late rally.
UC Santa Barbara (10-2) scored three goals in the fourth period, the last of which came as time expired, to pull out the narrow win.
Sophomore goalkeeper Bennett Bugelli recorded eight saves, while Franke scored two goals.
UC San Diego resumes action in the Triton Invitational on Sunday afternoon, as it takes on Marist beginning at 12 p.m.
