Tritons Solid at West Invitational

PASADENA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego fencing team took part in the West Invitational Sunday on the campus of Caltech in Pasadena. The event also served as the Western Fencing Conference (WFC) Team Championships.

The UC San Diego women finished as WFC co-champion in a three-way tie for first place.

The epee squad upset Northwestern, 6-3. Taly Yukelson was 14-3, Katie Hallsten was 11-5 and Amelia Harrison was 12-6.

In Women's Saber, Lillian Chu had a strong performance with a 13-4 record.

In Women's Foil, Sophia Holmqvist and Caitlyn Callaghan had strong outings, recording 12-5 and 13-5 records, respectively.

It marks the third-straight year that the Triton women have finished atop the WFC.

On the men’s side, UC San Diego finished second in the conference behind Stanford.

The foil squad was undefeated and accounted for a majority of the Tritons' victories.

David Hadler went 9-0 in foil, defeating strong competitors from Stanford and Air Force, as well as a Latvian World Cup fencer from the University of Incarnate Word.

Co-captain Mitchell Shulman compiled a 7-3 record in foil, while Thejas Gulati led the saber contingent with an impressive 13-2 record for the day.

The Triton men were second in 2016 as well.

Along with UCSD, the Western Fencing Conference is comprised of Air Force, Caltech, Incarnate Word and Stanford.

UC San Diego next competes at the San Diego Open, Jan. 22 at Cathedral Catholic High School.
