Triton Women Win Western Fencing Conference Title, Men Finish Second

STANFORD, Calif. - The University of California San Diego women brought home a fourth-consecutive Western Fencing Conference (WFC) title Sunday at the Western Invitational, hosted by Stanford at the Arrillaga Center for Sports and Recreation. The UC San Diego men were also strong, placing second overall.

The Triton women were undefeated in WFC action at 4-0, recording team victories against Air Force (15-12), Caltech (25-2), Incarnate Word (24-3), and Stanford (22-5). The epee and foil squads both went 4-0, while saber was 3-1 on the day.

Air Force (3-1) finished second, Stanford (2-2) was third, Incarnate Word (1-3) was fourth, and Caltech (0-4) placed fifth in the team standings.

In addition, UCSD defeated Vassar (24-3) and was downed by Northwestern (9-18) in non-conference match-ups.

Individually, epeeist Taly Yukelson went 9-2, foilists Mia Chiang and Konami Masui each posted 6-3 records, and sabreuse Miya Coimbra was 10-5.

On the men's side, UC San Diego went 3-1 for its second-place finish, defeating Air Force (17-10), Caltech (22-5), and Incarnate Word (23-4) while falling against Stanford (10-17). Foil was perfect at 4-0, saber posted a 3-1 mark, and epee was 2-2.

Stanford topped the men's field at 4-0. Air Force (2-2) was third, Incarnate Word (1-3) finished fourth, and Caltech (0-4) rounded out the placings in fifth.

The Triton men have placed second in the WFC each of the last three seasons.

UCSD also defeated non-conference opponent Vassar (18-9).

In epee, Zach Kravitz went 11-2. Foilist David Hadler was 5-1 and sabreur Matthew Misogas finished at 7-4.

UC San Diego hosts its first tournament of 2018 on Jan. 20 as the Women's Duals take place at Main Gym on campus. The event is set to begin at 2:45 p.m.
