Benjamin Hadler Wins, Four Other Tritons Find Podium During BladeRunner

UCSD

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego fencing team finished the weekend with one win, five total podium finishes, and eight top-10 placings at the prestigious 23rd annual BladeRunner tournament, held Saturday and Sunday in the newly-remodeled RIMAC Arena.

Freshman foilist Benjamin Hadler wowed the crowd as he collected a gold medal in the Junior Men's Foil event, which featured 71 participants. Hadler was the first seed coming in to the competition and went undefeated in pools with an impressive +20 in indicators.

Hadler also placed sixth in Senior Men's Foil.

Benjamin’s older brother and 2018 UC San Diego graduate David Hadler placed second in the Senior Men’s Foil event, losing the final bout by only one touch. David is a four-time NCAA Championship qualifier and two-time All American.

The next best finish for UC San Diego came from freshman Justin Park, who took the silver in Junior Men’s Saber. Park, seeded 12th out of pools, downed top-seeded Jonathan Ma in the semifinals.

Freshman Julia Hill represented the UC San Diego women on the podium, finishing third in a field of 41 competitors. Sixth-seeded Hill faced teammate Dana Chou in the table of 16, winning the match 15-11.

More Triton vs. Triton combat was seen in Senior Men’s Saber, where freshman Syed Adam Emir Putra, seeded 23rd out of pools, went up against ninth-seeded sophomore Alejandro Fosado. Syed Adam won the match 15-14 and advanced to fence second-seeded senior Evan George, who he beat 15-5 to move on to the semifinals. In the end, Syed Adam finished with bronze out of 56 fencers.

Rounding out the podium finishes for UC San Diego was sophomore men's epee captain Ziad Khayat, who tied for third in a 76-fencer Senior Men's Epee field, the largest of the entire tournament.

Other top-10 finishers included freshman Brandon Chien (fifth in Junior Men's Epee), freshman Alex Soderberg (seventh in Junior Men's Epee), sophomore Brandon Lee (eighth in Senior Men's Foil), junior Alexandre Leonelli (eighth in Senior Men's Saber), George (fifth in Senior Men's Saber), senior Christine Drake-Thomas (eighth in Senior Women's Epee), and sophomore Emily Beihold (eighth in Junior Women's Epee).

"The team put together an impressive performance this weekend," said UC San Diego head coach Juan Ignacio Calderon. "We have a balanced team that knows how to compete and also how to support each other."

This year's BladeRunner featured a record 740 competitors, including many international and nationally-ranked fencers.

BladeRunner marked the final competition for the Tritons in 2018. They will be back in action on Jan. 12 for the West Invitational, hosted by the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.
