Tritons Win Five of Six Events at San Diego Cup
SAN DIEGO - The University of California San Diego fencing team won a program best five of six events at the San Diego Cup, which was held Sunday at Cathedral Catholic High School.
The UC San Diego women had a clean sweep with sophomore Konami Masui taking the gold in Senior Foil, sophomore Emily Beihold winning Senior Epee and renewing her ‘B’ rating, and sophomore Miya Coimbra finishing atop the podium in Senior Saber.
Other notable performances in the women’s categories went to sophomore Lara Obedin and freshman Erica Kuen, who tied for third in Senior Foil, senior Michelle Caplin and junior Amelia Harrison, who tied for third in Senior Epee, and freshman Julia Hill, who took silver in Senior Saber.
On the men’s side, sophomore Ziad Khayat turned in a gold medal performance in Senior Epee and junior Dillon Cooke won Senior Foil. Both Tritons had undefeated days as they went 5-0 and 4-0 in pools, respectively. Khayat and Cooke also renewed their ‘A’ ratings.
In Men’s Saber, sophomore Alejandro Fosado placed second after going 6-0 in pools and beating freshman teammates Justin Park and Syed Adam Emir Putra, both by a slim 15-14 margin. Emir Putra ended up tying for third.
After an action-packed day, the Tritons left with five gold medals, two silvers, and eight bronzes.
UC San Diego can next be seen in action Jan. 30-31 at Main Gym on campus as it competes in a tournament against members of the Spanish and Mexican National Teams. The event will serve as final training before the team travels to Evanston, Ill., for the Northwestern Invitational, where it will compete with the top squads in the country.
