UC San Diego Hosts Spanish and Mexican National Teams this Week
LA JOLLA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego men’s and women’s fencing team is hosting a tournament against members of the Spanish and Mexican National Teams on Wednesday Jan. 30, and Thursday Jan. 31, in Main Gym on campus. Admission is free and open to the public.
Wednesday's first day of competition, which is slated to run from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., will feature action in foil and saber. Top Mexican fencers attending include Natalia Botello (2017 Women’s Saber Junior World Champion), Julieta Toledo (2016 Women’s Saber Olympian), and Diego Cervantes (2018 Men’s Foil bronze-medalist at the Cadet World Championships).
Thursday will feature the men’s and women’s epee squads competing from 8 a.m. until noon. Elite Spaniards that will be fencing include Yulen Perieria (World #11 and silver medalist at the Doha Grand Prix this past weekend), Manuel Barguess (World #56), and Alvaro Ibañez (World #68).
"We are honored to host a representation from the Mexican and Spanish National Teams this week at UC San Diego," said Tritons' head coach Juan Ignacio Calderon. "We will be fencing some of the best fencers in the world in an NCAA format. It is the perfect preparation before we travel to Northwestern this weekend."
The Northwestern Duals take place Feb. 2-3 at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. The Tritons will face many of the nation’s top NCAA squads including Duke, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn, Penn State, Princeton, and Temple.
