Tritons Post Impressive Results at USA Fencing Summer Nationals
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The University of California San Diego fencing team had many reasons to celebrate during the USA Fencing Summer National Championships that took place June 28 through July 7 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Ohio.
Justin Park took eighth place in the Division 1A Saber Championship in a strong field of 114 nationally-ranked fencers. He posted a 4-2 record in the preliminary round where he was ranked 22nd and then delivered an impressive performance in the direct elimination rounds to escalate to his final placing. Park returns to UC San Diego in September as a sophomore.
Ziad Khayat finished fifth in the Division 1A Epee Championship out of 174 qualified competitors. He went 5-1 in the preliminary round, earning him the 15th seed. In the direct elimination rounds, he climbed all the way to fifth. Khayat had an amazing season for the Tritons in 2018-19, placing seventh at the NCAA Championships to earn All-America accolades. He will be entering his junior year at UC San Diego.
Triton Associate Head Coach Josh Runyan fenced in the Veteran 60 Saber National Championship and took home the title for the third time in a row. The victory earned him a spot on the U.S. National Veteran Team that will attend the World Championships in Cairo, Egypt, this fall. Last year, Runyan won a bronze medal at Worlds.
Alyssa de la Cruz, who will be a freshman at UC San Diego this fall, took second place in the Division 2 Foil Championship.
Finally, Aditi Soin, who recently graduated from UC San Diego, was the recipient of the USA Fencing Spirit of Sport Award. Voted on by the 30,000 USA Fencing members, the annual award recognizes those that exemplify the values of the sport including a high level of sportsmanship.
