Tritons Dominant at San Diego Cup

SAN DIEGO - The University of California San Diego fencing team opened its fall season Sunday at the San Diego Cup at Cathedral Catholic High School. The dominant Tritons came away with wins in four of the six weapons.

On the men's side, junior Ziad Khayat took first in Senior Epee, while freshman Shawn Kim was victorious in Senior Saber. For the women, junior Emily Beihold topped the field in Senior Epee and sophomore Julia Hill won in Senior Saber.

Overall, UC San Diego fencers earned 14 podium finishes, seven for the women and seven for the men.

Freshman Alexandra Brondum placed second in Senior Foil and classmate Sarah Shen was second in Senior Saber. Junior Dana Chou tied for third in Senior Saber, freshman Alyssa De La Cruz tied for third in Senior Foil, and junior Emma Zmurk tied for third in Senior Epee.

Freshman Rishi Ranadive placed second in Senior Foil, while sophomore Benjamin Hadler and junior Brandon Lee tied for third in that weapon. Senior Scott Phillips placed third in Senior Epee and sophomore Justin Park tied for third in Senior Saber.

UC San Diego is next in action at the North American Cup, which runs Oct. 18-21 in Kansas City, Mo.
