Yukelson and Hernandez Are San Diego Hall of Champions Stars of the Month For March

SAN DIEGO - Taly Yukelson and Gabriel Hernandez from the University of California San Diego's fencing and swimming programs have been named San Diego Hall of Champions (SDHOC) Stars of the Month for March.

Yukelson finished sixth of 24 women’s epee competitors at the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis.

The freshman recorded a 14-9 record with victories over fencers from Columbia, Cornell, Duke, Fairleigh Dickinson, Harvard, MIT, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Northwestern, Penn State, Princeton, Stanford, and Yale.

Yukelson earned several upset wins, including a 5-3 topping of Olympian Katharine Holmes from Princeton, who went on to compete in the championship bout.

She earned All-America honors for finishing in the top 12.

Hernandez, a senior, earned two All-America distinctions and two All-America honorable mentions while breaking all three of his own individual school standards during his first and only NCAA Division II Championships in Birmingham, Ala., March 8-11.

He placed second in the 200-yard butterfly (1:44.80), third in the 400 individual medley (3:48.52) and ninth in the 200 IM (1:46.39), all in school-record times in finals, and 11th in the 200 breaststroke. The native of Valencia, Venezuela, and member of the Venezuela national team, totaled seven school-record swims on the year.
