LONG BEACH, Calif. - University of California San Diego swimmers Rachel Taylor and Tenny Chong, both true freshmen, are the Pacific Collegiate Swimming and Diving Conference (PCSC) Division II Athletes of the Week for the week of Oct. 23-29.
Taylor and Chong aided UC San Diego to a season-opening sweep of duals over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps last Saturday, Oct. 28, at Canyonview Aquatic Center.
Taylor, out of Laguna Hills (Crean Lutheran HS), guided the 10th-ranked UC San Diego women to an easy 175-114 victory over the Athenas, the No. 16 team in the NCAA Division III. She produced a pair of individual wins, posting one of two NCAA consideration qualifiers by a Triton on the day in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:19.53), and also hitting the wall first in the 200 individual medley in 2:09.36. She was second in the 100 breast, timing 1:06.57 behind senior All-American teammate Angie Phetbenjakul (1:05.64).
Chong, a native of Arcadia (Arcadia HS), directed the seventh-ranked Triton men to a 148-135 decision over the Stags, rated No. 14 in Division III. He swept the backstroke distances in 50.79 and 1:50.70, falling .68 seconds shy of a B cut in the 200, and also swam on both winning relays. Chong anchored the meet-opening 200 medley relay (1:33.94), and led off the fastest 200 free relay (1:24.68) to cap his college debut in style with a split of 20.85, a mere .04 seconds off a B standard.
The PCSC names one male and one female swimmer or diver from each of the divisions represented within the conference as Athlete of the Week.
The UC San Diego swimmers head north to Santa Barbara to take on the Division I Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara this Saturday, Nov. 4. The action at Campus Pool gets underway at 11 a.m.
