Release: Thursday 11/16/2017

SAN DIEGO - The University of California San Diego men's and women's swimmers competed Thursday on the first day of the 2017 A3 Performance Invitational.

UC San Diego is serving as host of the three-day meet, the top competition on its fall schedule annually, for the ninth consecutive year. San Diego State University is a co-host for this edition as the event takes place at SDSU's Aztec Aquaplex for the very first time. Swimwear manufacturer A3 Performance is the fourth-year title sponsor.

Among seven teams in action Thursday on the women's side, UC San Diego has 384 points for second, behind only San Diego State (412). With just two men's teams on hand, the Tritons lead nationally-ranked Division II foe Fresno Pacific, 542.5-437.5.

In morning preliminaries of the 50-yard freestyle, senior captain Haley Murphy (23.78) earned her first NCAA consideration qualifier and freshman Ciara Franke (23.88) the first of her college career. Franke (23.73) and Murphy (23.87) went 5-6 in the evening final.

Another true freshman, Rachel Taylor, moved up from seventh (2:06.40) in prelims of the 200 individual medley, all the way up to fourth following the final, nearly two full seconds faster at 2:04.71 for her first B standard in the event. Junior Amanda Sumrow was seventh (2:06.98).

Junior Reagan Eickert (4:58.17) and senior Haley Hamza (5:00.83) were 4-5 in the 500 free, and senior Stephanie Sin (5:04.14) seventh, all with B cuts.

Junior Alejandro Ortiz (4:30.95), freshman Zack Reuter (4:31.20), senior captain Kevin Fink (4:33.01) and sophomore Ian Brower (4:36.47) took up the top four spots in the men's 500, the first three in B times.

Junior Garrett Tse was runner-up in the 200 IM in 1:51.56, and senior Samuel Lee placed third in the 50 free in 21.33.

In the relays, the Triton women's 200 free relay was third and 400 medley relay fourth. Both UCSD men's relays hit the wall behind FPU.

The 2017 A3 Performance Invitational continues with seven more events on Friday, Nov. 17, with preliminaries at 9 a.m. and finals starting at 4:30 p.m. FloSwimming is broadcasting the meet for the first time via pay-per-view subscription service, with live results available through the Meet Mobile application.
