Spencer Daily Earns Tritons' First Ever MPSF Athlete of the Week Honor
WOODLAND, Calif. – Spencer Daily of the No. 11 University of California San Diego men’s swimming and diving team was honored as the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF)/TYR Male Athlete of the Week on Wednesday.
Daily could not be caught at either of the Tritons’ meets during the week, winning six individual events and helping two relay squads to first-place finishes. Against Incarnate Word and Wyoming on Thursday, Daily touched the wall first in the 50 freestyle (20.87), 100 free (46.51), and 100 butterfly (49.33). The Danville native also helped the men to victory in the day’s final event, the 200 free relay. Alongside Tyler James, Sawyer Farmer, and Marc Caron, Daily and the A squad compiled a time of 1:23.61 to earn the top spot.
The freshman followed up on Saturday against CSU Bakersfield by dropping time off of each of his individual events. Daily was again unmatched in the 50 free (20.58), 100 free (45.91), and 100 fly (48.58). He capped off the meet with a record-setting performance in the 400 free relay. James, Farmer, Daily, and Caron achieved a new Canyonview Aquatic Center record in the event, posting a time of 3:04.83 and finishing over three seconds ahead of the second-place Roadrunner A team.
Daily becomes the team’s first ever MPSF/TYR Athlete of the Week recipient in the midst of UC San Diego’s first year as an MPSF member. He and his Triton teammates will face multiple conference opponents when they hit the road this weekend. First, they will compete against MPSF foe UC Santa Barbara at 3 p.m. at UCLA on Friday. Then, they will match up against conference rival Cal Poly for a dual meet at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
