LA JOLLA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego men’s and women’s cross country teams each finished in third place at the 24th annual Triton Classic, Saturday at UCSD’s North Campus Course.
The UCSD men had three finishers in the top 10 with Tareq Alwafai leading the way through an eighth-place performance, completing the eight-kilometer course in 25:47.43. Fellow redshirt senior Scott Acton and sophomore Samuel Blake came in right next to each other in ninth (25:56.47) and 10th (25:57.83), respectively. Sophomore Garrett Boulais was 14th (26:07.74) and senior Terrence Luevano rounded out the scorers with an 18th-place (26:13.88) effort. Central Arizona’s Gilbert Kigen was the individual winner and broke the previous course record held by Chico State's Alfonso Cisneros set in 2013 (25:40.8) by nearly a whole minute with a time of 24:42.55.
The 12th-ranked Triton men scored 57 points for third. No. 4 Chico State won the team title with 23 and Central Arizona took second with 51. The Wildcats showed their dominance taking second, third, fifth, sixth and seventh.
In the womens' six-kilometer race, the duo of senior Ella Verhees (San Diego/Point Loma HS) and sophomore Karina Carstens paced UCSD with eighth (22:30.83) and ninth (22:31.52) place finishes, respectively. Junior Merin Arft was the next Triton finisher in 14th (23:01.44). Junior Kristin Semancsin (San Diego/Valhalla HS) was two places behind Arft at 16th (23:08.17). Sophomore Christa Kloha (San Diego/Westview HS) rounded out the scorers, coming in 28th with a time of 23:38.15. Cal State San Bernardino’s Laura Aceves was the individual winner, crossing the finish line in 21:46.03.
The 14th-ranked UCSD women scored 69 points for third place. Point Loma won with 54 and No. 4 Chico State was second with 60.
The Triton Classic concludes the regular season for the Tritons. UCSD will next compete at the 2016 California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships on Saturday, Oct. 22, at Cucamonga-Guasti Regional Park in Ontario.
