SAINT LEO, Fla. - Seniors Tareq Alwafai and Brendan Gee (Rancho Bernardo/Rancho Bernardo HS) from the University of California San Diego cross country team capped off their Triton careers at the NCAA Championships, Saturday at The Abbey Course on the campus of St. Leo University.

Gee, who made it to nationals for the first time, ran the 10-kilometer course in 31:41.5 for 59th place out of 242 runners. Alwafai, who made his return to the NCAA Championships since 2013, came in 101st with a time of 32:17.7

Alwafai was in 45th, while Gee was 54th at the halfway mark through five kilometers.

“I'm really pleased with how our men went after it today,” said head coach Nate Garcia. “At the NCAA meet you have to commit early and both of our men did that. While they weren't able to move up as much as we had hoped, they fought hard to the end.”

Vincent Kiprop from Missouri Southern was the individual winner at 29:07.4. Adams State took home the team title.

UCSD will return 12 Tritons from the men's side and 10 for the women, including Aren Johnson for the men and Karina Carstens for the women who were both named All-CCAA this past season.
