SAN DIEGO - Senior distance runner Paige Hughes and redshirt junior decathlete Dan Golubovic from the UC San Deigo track & field team have been named San Diego Hall of Champions Stars of the Month for the month of May.

Hughes won her third consecutive conference title in the 10000 at the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Track & Field Championships, May 5-7. She completed the 25-lap race in 36:03.42, leading from start to finish and outkicking Chico State’s Sadie Gastelum (36:07.79) down the stretch. The San Diego native (Valhalla HS) also took home the CCAA title in 2014 (37:32.91) and 2015 (36:02.64) in the event as well. Hughes qualified for the NCAA Track & Field Championships, held May 26-28 in Bradenton, Fla., in the 10000 and placed 18th with a time of 37:16.04 to end her collegiate career.

Golubovic won the CCAA titles in the javelin (197’6”) and pole vault (15’7.25”), and placed fifth in the discus at the CCAA Championships, scoring 24 of the team’s 190 points as the Tritons finished second in team competition. The redshirt junior qualified for the NCAA Championships in the pole vault and decathlon. He earned All-America honors in the decathlon at nationals, placing sixth with 7116 points and tied for 15th in the pole vault.

The Tritons now contribute 10 athletes as San Diego Hall of Champions Stars of the Month for the 2016 calendar year. Golubovic and Hughes join Kelsi Maday (softball) and Laurel Kistler (women's water polo), who were honored in April. Fencer Leanne Singleton-Comfort and swimmer Dari Watkins, were March honorees, swimmers Michael Cohn and Colleen Daley were selected in February and basketball standouts Jamie Katuna and Adam Klie were January picks.
