SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The University of California San Diego men's and women's track and field teams both won the Mangrum Invitational at Cal State San Marcos' Mangrum Track & Field on Saturday. The women placed first out of eight teams with 77 points, while the men took first with 101.5 points in a field of five teams.
In total, the women won 10 events while the men collected 13 first-place finishes.
"This was a perfect season opener for us," said UCSD women's head coach Darcy Ahner. "This sets us up perfectly for our triangular scoring meet next week against Big West rivals UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine."
Savanna Forry earned two individual wins in the high jump and hammer throw. She cleared 5'8.75" to earn a strong provisional mark that should net the two-time high jump All-American a third straight trip to the NCAA Championships. She hit a 148'3" mark in the hammer.
In her first collegiate meet, true freshman Claudia Cox earned an NCAA provisional mark in the 400-meter hurdles with a winning time of 1:02.38.
Esther Nofodji took home two first-places finishes. She won the shot put with a distance of 34'3", and the discus (142').
Avery Schulhofer took first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.76 and finished second in the 100 in 12.15. It was an impressive track and field debut for the sophomore after spending her freshman year at UCSD in the soccer program.
The UCSD men and women also swept first place in the long jump with Casey Buck winning for the women (17'6.75") and Randy Copeman taking first for the men (21'8.25"). For Copeman, a redshirt senior, it was a triumphant return to competition after missing the past two seasons.
In the 100 hurdles, Meghan Fletcher finished first on the women's side in 15.28 while Nicholas Rack placed first in the 110 hurdles for the men. Josef Polk was the first-place finisher in the 400 hurdles (55.48).
The men's 4x400 relay (3:23.16) and 4x100 relay (41.48) took first while the women's 4x100 relay (4:01.08) also crossed the line in first place.
The Tritons now await their 2017 home opener, the All-UC Challenge, as they welcome in rivals UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara for the triangular meet on Saturday, March 4. The action gets underway at 1 p.m. at Triton Track & Field Stadium on North Campus in La Jolla.
