Forry, Nofodji Highlight Day One of Triton Invitational

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Sophomore Esther Nofodji and senior Savanna Forry highlighted the first day of competition for the University of California San Diego men's and women's track and field teams at their own annual Triton Invitational, Friday at Triton Track & Field Stadium.

To begin the two-day meet, UC San Diego's Nofodji (San Diego/Hoover HS) hit an NCAA provisional mark in the open discus with a distance of 148'9", finishing in ninth place. Her throw is No. 8 all-time for UCSD. In the invitational discus, former San Diego State Aztec Whitney Ashley won the event with a distance of 209'5.75", over fellow 2016 U.S. Olympian Kelsey Card (200'7.75").

Forry also excelled, achieving a personal-best mark in the invitational hammer throw with a distance of 163'0.25". Her heave is good for seventh all-time for the Tritons. She finished 19th overall in the event. Senior Dorienne Ordaz was right behind Forry, in 20th place with a distance of 162'6", eighth all-time for UCSD. The winner of the invitational was Arizona State's Maggie Ewen (224'11.5"), just ahead of Canadian national record-holder and two-time Olympian Sultana Frizell (222'0.5").

In the women's open pole vault, juniors Devin Stetson and Carly Heffernan each climbed a height of 11'4". Stetson tied for seventh while Heffernan placed ninth based on number of attempts. On the men's side, freshman Shane Peterson took eighth (13'5.25").

Remaining Friday entrants for UCSD were redshirt senior Megan Benham in the pole vault (T-15th, 10'4.25") and junior Hannah Johnson in the open discus (22nd, 122'4") .

The Triton Invitational concludes on Saturday, April 22, starting with the men's hammer throw at 9:30 a.m. Action on the track gets going at 11 a.m. with the women's 4x100 relay. Parking is free.
