Three Tritons Receive Invitations to NCAA Championships
INDIANAPOLIS - Three University of California San Diego student-athletes have qualified for the 2017 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The announcement was made Tuesday by the NCAA.
Seniors Chrissi Carr and Savanna Forry, and freshman Claudia Cox, each qualified in one event. Carr will compete in the pole vault while Forry will represent UC San Diego in the high jump and Cox will be making her NCAA debut in the 400 hurdles.
The three-day meet, co-hosted by IMG Academy and the University of Tampa, will take place May 25-27 at the IMG Academy Stadium in Bradenton, Fla.
Carr grabbed the only automatic qualifier for UCSD this year when she cleared a height of 13'1.5", the exact automatic qualifying standard, at the All-UC Challenge on March 4. The mark bettered her own school record of 12'6.25", set in 2016. The Atascadero native is seeded eighth in the event and will be making her third trip to the championships after receiving invitations in 2015 and 2016. She placed 20th in last year's competition and finished 16th in 2015.
Forry, a two-time All-American, will also be making her third NCAA appearance in the high jump. She secured the 11th seed after finishing with an effort of 5'8.75" at the Mangrum Invitational in February. The Porter Ranch product had back-to-back 11th-place finishes at the 2015 and 2016 championships with marks of 5'5" and 5'5.75", respectively.
In her first year as a Triton, Cox is seeded 20th in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.54. The Greenville, N.C., native earned the qualifier at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational in April. The hurdles specialist finished fourth in the event at her first California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships.
A total of 754 student-athletes, 377 men and 377 women, qualified for the championships by reaching the automatic and provisional standards established for each event. The meet will run Thursday-Saturday, May 25-27, with all track events and select field action streamed live on NCAA.com.
Cox will be in preliminaries of the 400 hurdles on Thursday night at 5:25 p.m. PT. Should she advance, the final is on Saturday at 4:20 p.m. PT. Forry competes in the high jump on Friday at 2:05 p.m. PT, and Carr in the pole vault on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. PT.
