UC San Diego Set to Host California Collegiate Open

UC San Diego will host the 2018 California Collegiate Open on Saturday, March 31. The meet was formerly known as the Cal-Nevada Championships from 1993-2014, and the California Collegiate Invitational from 2015-17. Competition will start with the men's hammer (UCSD Throwing Field), women's shot put and women's pole vault at 11 a.m. Action on the track gets underway at 12 p.m. with the women's 3000 steeplechase.

Live results will be provided for Saturday's meet through the free Finished Results app, compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. A live scoreboard is also available here.

ADMISSION
Track and field meets on North Campus are free for UCSD students to attend, with valid identification. General admission for Saturday's California Collegiate Open is $10. The fee is $5 for outside students with ID, seniors 65 and older, and youth. Children seven and under are free. Parking is free on the UCSD campus on weekends. The nearest recommended parking lot for track meets is the Hopkins Parking Structure adjacent to RIMAC Arena.

THE ROAD TO CHARLOTTE
Several Triton athletes have scored provisional marks in an effort to compete at the 2018 NCAA Division II Championships in Charlotte, N.C., in late May. Senior Paul Doan became the first to do so this season in the 100-meter dash at the Pomona-Pitzer Collegiate All Comers Meet on Feb. 17 in Claremont. The remaining provisionals are:

CHALLACOMBE TURNS IN GREAT PERFORMANCE IN HEPTATHLON
Sophmore Chelsea Challacombe took second in the heptathlon with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 4699 points at the 40th Annual Aztec Invitational hosted by San Diego State on Thursday, March 22 and Friday, March 23. She moved into third all-time at UC San Diego in the event with her final point total behind only UCSD greats Stephanie LeFever (5385), the 2011 national runner-up, and Linda Rainwater (5333), the 2008 national champion. The Los Alamo, N.M. native finished in the top three in five of the seven events over the course of the two days, taking second in the high jump (season-best 5'5") and third in the 100-meter hurdles (personal-record 15.09), shot put (34'9.5"), long jump (17'4") and 800 meter (2:25.98).

DOAN SETS NEW SCHOOL RECORD
Paul Doan (San Diego/St. Augustine HS) broke his own school record in the 100 meter at Pomona-Pitzer's Collegiate All Comers Meet in Claremont on Feb. 17. Doan beat his own school record by just .01 with a 10.52 time. 

DOAN AND CHALLACOMBE COLLECT WEEKLY HONORS
Paul Doan was named California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men's Track Athlete of the Week for the weeks of Feb. 17-Feb. 26 for his performances at Pomona-Pitzers Collegiate All-Comers Meet and Mangrum Invitational. Doan swept the 100 and 200 sprints and anchored the fastest 4 x 100-meter relay in both meets. Chelsea Challacombe earned CCAA Field Athlete of the Week honors for the week of March 19-March 25 after taking second in the heptathlon at the 40th Annual Aztec Invitational.

#BIGWESTBOUND
On Nov. 27, UC San Diego was officially invited to become a member of the NCAA Division I Big West Conference. The Tritons will begin a four-year reclassification period starting in the fall of 2020. They will play a full Big West schedule that season and will be elgible for NCAA Championships in men's volleyball, men's and women's water polo, and fencing. For the 2024-25 academic year, all sports will be elgivble to compete in Big West and NCAA Division I championships. Read the full press release here.
