Doan, Bowen Nab All-American Honors on Day 1 of NCAA Championships

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The University of California San Diego had three standouts compete on Day 1 of the 2018 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Irwin Belk Complex on Thursday.

Redshirt junior Matt Bowen (long jump), senior Paul Doan (100 meters) and senior Meghan Fletcher (400 hurdles) were in action, with both Bowen (12th overall) and Doan (11th) earning All-America Second Team honors. However, all three were unable to qualify for the final round in their respective events.

Bowen began the day for the Tritons placing 12th overall in the long jump with a best leap of 24-feet, 1.5-inches (7.35-meters), just out of reach of the top-nine qualifiers for the final round. Bowen's best jump this season was 24'9", which ranked ninth in the nation, and his all-time school-record leap as a true sophomore in 2016 was 25'0.5".

The Fresno native finished 10th in the 2016 NCAA Championships with a mark of 24'5.5". Bowen will also compete in the triple jump on Saturday.

Doan, the first NCAA-qualifying men's sprinter in UC San Diego's Division II era (since 2001), finished 11th overall in the 100-meter prelims on Thursday. His mark was slightly behind the eighth and final qualifying time of 10.56 by Tiffin University's Reginald Thomas.

The senior from San Diego (St. Augustine HS) broke his own school record in the event three times earlier this season, from 10.53 all the way down to 10.39, and entered the national meet ranked 16th in the nation. Thursday marked his final collegiate 100-meter race, having first matched the program standard (10.62) at the 2016 California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships, before lowering it a total of five times in all. Doan will now turn his attention toward competing in the 200 on Friday beginning at approximately 2:35 p.m. PT.

Fletcher finished with a time of 1:01.95 in the 400 hurdles, placing 18th overall in her first career NCAA Championships. The senior from Pleasanton qualified with a time of 1:00.59, which ranked 20th in the nation and is the fourth-best mark in UC San Diego history.

More Tritons are in action on Day 2 Friday, starting with redshirt junior Tais Marinho-Gomez competing in the triple jump beginning at 1:45 p.m. PT. Doan highlights the 200 prelims at 2:35 p.m., while junior Nicholas Rack looks to have a big day in the 110 hurdles starting at 3:40 p.m. Watch at least the track events live at
