Balanced Attack Nets Tritons 3-2 Win vs. Concordia
LA JOLLA, Calif. - Four players totaled at least 10 kills to lead the University of California San Diego men's volleyball team to a 3-2 victory against Concordia University Irvine in a non-conference match Friday night at RIMAC Arena.
Scores were 27-25, 25-22, 19-25, 21-25, and 15-13 in favor of UC San Diego (4-6).
Several Tritons registered career-highs in the match.
Wyatt Harrison amassed a career- and match-high 23 kills, the most by any Triton in a single contest this year, while also adding eight digs and five blocks.
Collin Shannon had a career-high 17 kills on .448 (17-4-29) hitting. He tacked on a career-best 11 digs for his first-ever double-double.
Setter Connor Walbrecht joined the career-high party with 53 assists.
Defensively, libero Ryan Lew led all players with 19 digs, one short of his career-best.
In its first five-set match of 2019, UC San Diego hit .274 with 72 kills and 27 errors in 164 attack attempts. The Tritons hit over .300 in sets three, four, and five. They held a 57-47 advantage in digs and had a season-high 14.5 blocks. The team has finished with a double-digit block total in its last two matches.
Concordia (4-8) attacked at .217 (57-24-152) and had 15.5 blocks. Jordan Hoppe paced the Eagles with 19 kills and Hunter Howell was strong at the net, collecting nine blocks (three solos).
The two squads will meet again on March 8 in Irvine.
Continuing its current six-match home stand, UC San Diego plays host to UC Santa Cruz (6-6) Saturday at 7 p.m. The Banana Slugs were swept by Concordia Thursday in Irvine.
