UC San Diego 4th, Navigato Grabs Season-Best 5th at UCSB Intercollegiate
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego men's golf team moved up a spot to finish fourth of eight teams Tuesday at the UCSB Intercollegiate at Sandpiper in Santa Barbara. Adam Navigato (Solana Beach/Torrey Pines HS) nabbed his season-best finish, tying for fifth among 55 players.
The field consisted of six NCAA Division I teams and two Division II squads. UC San Diego placed in front of three DI programs as well as fellow California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) member Cal State Monterey Bay, the 17th-ranked team in the country.
In what proved to be the toughest, and windiest, round of play on the par 72, 7,062-yard course, the Tritons shot a 295 to go along with a 292 and a 288 in Monday's rounds. They totaled an 875, 11 over par.
A super consistent Navigato, who was tied for 13th entering Tuesday's third and final round, finished 1 over with a 217. The junior fired rounds of 73, 72, and 72. He had 10 birdies, tied for the second-most during the event.
Freshman Elliot Bunyaviroch earned the top finish of his young career, tying for 12th with a 3 over 219. He shot a 71 in rounds one and three and sandwiched a 77 in between. Bunyaviroch made a huge jump on the leader board as he was tied for 28th coming into today.
Junior Justin Woo (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS) (74-75-75--224) tied for 25th, juniors Hayden Hui (74-72-79--225) and Jacob Johnson (75-73-77--225) tied for 29th, and sophomore Ryan Vaughan (77-71-87--235) tied for 48th.
Host UC Santa Barbara won the team title with a 4 over 868. UC Riverside was two strokes behind in second and Weber State was three strokes back in third.
Four schools in the field are out of the Big West Conference including UCR, UCSB, Cal Poly, and CSUN. UC San Diego will join the league for the 2020-21 season.
The individual medalist was Andrew Spilman from UCR, who was 3 under with a 213. Three players tied for second at 1 under.
The Sandpiper layout played to a 76.84 stroke average Tuesday.
Up next for UC San Diego is the CCAA Tournament, slated for April 23-24 at Bayonet and Blackhorse in Seaside.
