The UC San Diego Strength and Conditioning staff offers year-round training to all of the 23 Triton athletic teams. Through a wide variety of stimulus and techniques, our professional strength coaches provide a comprehensive training approach that allows our student-athletes to compete at their highest level.

As a strength staff, we invest fully in the mission of each of our teams as well as to the success of each student-athlete. It is our goal to help each student-athlete realize, if not surpass, his or her athletic potential. Through a blend of scientifically-based training techniques and high intensity motivation, we are able to extract the best out of each of our student-athletes.

The Triton Strength and Conditioning coaches are certified strength and conditioning specialists (CSCS) who pride themselves on maintaining their knowledge of the most current training concepts and techniques in order to develop the most comprehensive and competitive student- athlete.

Our staff is a high-energy, hands-on staff that knows what it's like to be dedicated to a team effort for a common goal. We believe that the greatest feeling of accomplishment is to know you did all you could do to become all you can be. It is our passion to make you better.

In October of 2015, UC San Diego opened the Alex G. Spanos Athletic Performance Center on campus. The 6,700 square foot area is adjacent to the Alex G. Spanos Training Center, combining for 12,000 square feet of space.

The state-of-the-art facility features zones for strength and conditioning and athletic training/rehabilitation, as well as an outdoor conditioning plaza, offices and a conference room. Specific amenities include 15 Hammer Strength Power Racks, Keiser Functional Trainers, Tendo units, Wattbikes, a 12-person hydro tub and an AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill.

Director of Strength & Conditioning

Myles Cooper returned to UC San Diego in September of 2013 to serve as the Tritons' Director of Strength and Conditioning.

Just prior, Cooper was an assistant athletic performance coach at UCLA from 2011-13.

Cooper was hired as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at UCSD in July of 2010, where he worked until 2011 before departing for UCLA.

Cooper served as a strength and conditioning intern at Marquette University before his time in Westwood. He worked with men's and women's cross country, men's and women's track and field, men's and women's tennis and women's basketball.

Cooper has also worked as an intern in the strength and conditioning department at the University of Utah and served as a conditioning coach at Park City High School in Park City, Utah.

From January 2008 to August 2009, he worked as a facility manager at The Orthopedic Specialty Hospital (TOSH) in Kearns, Utah, and has also spent time with the ABA's Utah Snow Bears.

Cooper earned a Bachelor's Degree in athletic training from Weber State University in 2002 and went on to obtain his Master's in exercise physiology with an emphasis in strength and conditioning from Baylor University in 2007. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).

Assistant Director of Strength & Conditioning

Scott Bankers was named UCSD's Assistant Director of Strength and Conditioning in August of 2015.

Most recently, Bankers was a strength and conditioning intern at the University of Denver. Prior to that, he interned at Creighton University and was concurrently a strength coach for Explosive Edge in Omaha, Neb.

Bankers earned a master’s degree in sport coaching and fitness training from the University of Jyvaskyla in Finland and a bachelor's degree in exercise science from Creighton.


Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach

Jason Boyd was named an assistant coach with UC San Diego Strength and Conditioning in September of 2015.

Before joining the staff at UCSD, Boyd served as the Director of Strength and Conditioning for Olympic sports at Albright College in Pennsylvania.

He previously worked at Eastern Illinois University as a graduate strength and conditioning intern and at D.D. Eisenhower High School in Illinois, where he was head strength & conditioning coach/assistant varsity football coach.

Boyd graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education (2010) and Master of Science in kinesiology and sports studies (2013).

Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach

Matt Tardif was named an assistant coach with UC San Diego Strength and Conditioning in September of 2015.

Formerly, Tardif was a strength and conditioning intern at Coastal Carolina University. He is no stranger to UCSD as he completed an internship with Strength and Conditioning in 2014.

Tardif received his Bachelor of Science degree in kinesiology from State University of New York at Cortland, where he played on the ice hockey team for three years.

He is currently working on receiving his master’s degree in heath science with a sports medicine concentration at NOVA Southeastern University.

Strength & Conditioning Intern

Nate Girma joined the UC San Diego Strength and Conditioning staff in September of 2015 as an intern.

Before UCSD, Girma worked for Ford Sports Performance as a strength and conditioning coach. Prior to that, he was a strength coach intern at the University of Washington.

Other previous work includes positions at G2 Sports Therapy, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Fitness Lab and Seattle Pacific University.

Girma graduated from Seattle Pacific University with a Bachelor of Science degree in science exercise.

Strength & Conditioning Intern

Jesi Metz was named a Strength and Conditioning intern with UC San Diego in September of 2015.

Prior to coming to La Jolla, Metz was a graduate assistant in Strength and Conditioning at Grand Canyon University from 2013-15. She was also an assistant women's basketball coach at GCU from 2011-13. She held the same role at Northwest Nazarene University from 2007-11.

Metz played basketball professionally in Slovakia, Honduras and for USA Elite as well.

Metz received her Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Northwest Nazarene University in 2006 and her Master of Arts in psychology In 2014.
