EVANSTON, Ill. - The UC San Diego fencing team battled cold weather and several tough opponents during two days of competition at the Northwestern Duals, which were held at the Sports and Aquatic Center on the NU campus. The Tritons emerged from the tournament with some solid victories, but also suffered several harsh defeats against some of the top programs in the country.

UCSD's women faced a throng of tough tests to start the day on Saturday, falling to host Northwestern (23-4), Ohio State (22-5) and Notre Dame (25-2), before losing a narrow 14-13 decision with Division II rival Wayne State. The Tritons did close the day on a winning note, however, taking down Farleigh Dickinson by a final tally of 21-6.

The men didn't fare much better against Notre Dame or Ohio State -- losing their bouts 21-6 and 18-9, respectively -- but did answer with a 19-8 victory over Wayne State. UCSD wrapped up the day with a close 14-13 loss to the University of North Carolina.

Sunday brought some good adjustments from the Triton fencers, but little improvement when it came to the results. The women started the day with a commanding 25-2 victory over Cleveland State, but followed that effort with losses to North Carolina (14-13), Stanford (15-12), Temple (21-6) and Princeton (24-3). UCSD then defeated Lawrence (21-6) and Detroit) (27-0) to wrap up the day.

There were similiar results for the men, as the Tritons took the floor with a 25-2 win over Cleveland State, but lost to Princeton, 19-8. UCSD bounced back with victories over Detroit (23-4) and Northwestern (20-7), but dropped an important matchup with Stanford, 19-8, before concluding the tournament with a decisive 26-1 triumph over Lawrence.

Individually, freshman Munira Gesner had a standout performance for UCSD on the women's side, going 20-10 overall and winning all three of her bouts against Northwestern. Sophomore James Galamba was very consistent for the Triton men, finishing 19-8 for the weekend, while team captain Nick McGuinness was 18-9, with an impressive 3-0 run against Stanford. Sophomore Alex Lavin posted a 13-7 record and freshman Nick Bartuzik was 13-9, which included three victories against Ohio State.

The Tritons will now return to La Jolla for a home meet against conference opponents Arizona State and UC Irvine this Saturday at 2:45 p.m. at UCSD's Main Gym.
