SANTA ROSA, Calif. - Competing in its final tournament of the fall season, the UC San Diego men's golf team finished in fourth place out of seven teams at the Sonoma State Invitational at the Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club on Tuesday.
The Tritons began the day in fifth place following rounds of 298 and 305 on Monday, but climbed one spot in the team standings after carding a 300 in the final round. UCSD wrapped up the tournament with a final tally of 51-over par, 903 on the par-71, 6,686-yard course.
Freshman Jay Lim was UCSD's top individual finisher, posting an overall score of 11-over par, 224. Lim carded rounds of 76, 73 and 75 to finish the event with a share of 17th place. A native of La Canada, Calif., Lim currently leads the Tritons with an average round of 75.7 through four events this season.
Lim finished three strokes in front of teammate Jacob Williams, who shot a 78 in the final round to finish at 14-over par, 227. Williams' score was good enough for a tie for 23rd place. Lewis Simon was UCSD's next-best finisher at +16, 229 after carding the Tritons' low round of the day with a 74. He finished in 26th place.
David Smith and Fredrik Palmer-Picard rounded out the scoring for UCSD with identical tallies of +17, 230. The sophomore duo finished with a share of 27th place overall.
Chico State, which held a five-stroke lead over Sonoma State entering the final round, shot an impressive 290 on Tuesday to win the team title at 18-over par, 870. The Wildcats finished 12 shots in front of the host Seawolves, who finished in second place at +30, 882 following a final round 297. Notre Dame de Namur took third place at +39, 891 (294).
Individual medalist honors went to Chico State's Kyle Souza, who shot a 69 on Tuesday to wrap up the tournament at 1-under par, 212. Stanford's Andre DeDecker, who was competing as one of 10 individuals, finished two strokes back to take second place at +1, 214, while teammate Marcel Puyat finished third at +3, 216.
