LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division II, the UC San Diego swim team picked up wins over a pair of Division I teams Saturday as the women defeated Loyola Marymount and the men topped Cal State Bakersfield at LMU's Burns Aquatics Center.
The Triton men won by a score of 165-97 over Cal State Bakersfield, which is ranked No. 8 in the latest CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major Division I Poll. The women were victorious over LMU by a score of 167-94.
UCSD finished 1-2-3 in five events on the men's side. Adam Rice led the way in sweeping two events. In the 100 butterfly, it was Rice in first (51.35) followed by Adam Yen in second (51.69) and freshman Dane Stassi in third (52.21). Rice also had the win in the 200 IM (1:55.80) with See Han Lee in second (1:59.32) and Nick Korth in third (1:59.57).
The Triton men took the top three spots in both breaststroke events. In the 100, Korth won (56.84), Lee was second (58.12) and Griffin Bracke placed third (58.86), while the 200 had Lee in first (2:04.49), Jacob Lammott in second (2:07.37) and Korth in third (2:09.66).
The 200 fly was dominated by the Tritons as well as Stassi was the winner (1:53.89) with Rice in second (1:54.98) and Ahiram Rodriguez took third (1:55.73).
Eric Owens swept the backstroke events, winning the 100 in 51.58 and 200 in 1:54.90. Also recording individual victories were Blake Langland in the 50 freestyle (21.07) and Alex Merrill in the 200 freestyle (1:42.57).
In the relays, UCSD came out on top in the 200 medley with the team of Owens, Korth, Rice and Langland (1:32.78).
The Triton women had clean sweeps in the 1000 freestyle and the 200 IM. In the distance swim, Bethany Dong came in first (10:41.41), Jessica Norgaard was second (10:45.82) and freshman Megan Lee followed in third place (10:52.74). It was also all Tritons in the 200 IM as Alex Henley touched first (2:09.57) and was trailed by two freshmen - Summer Bennett in second (2:12.20) and Eva Chen in third (2:13.14).
Henley was the big winner on the day as she came out on top in both backstroke events, claiming first in the 100 (57.48) and 200 (2:04.82).
Two other Tritons posted multiple wins. Emily Adamczyk won both breaststroke events, swimming a 1:05.51 in the 100 and a 2:19.45 in the 200. Anji Shakya won the 200 freestyle (1:54.10) and the 500 freestyle (5:08.06).
The final two UCSD victories went to Gabby Rossbach in the 200 butterfly (2:07.78) and Jaclyn Amog in the 100 butterfly (57.15).
The Tritons will swim a final dual prior to PCSC Championships as they travel to Cal Baptist on Saturday, Jan. 21. The conference championships will be held Feb. 8-11.
