SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's golf team posted its highest finish of the season on Tuesday, placing third out of 17 teams competing at the 2012 Cal State San Bernardino Coyote Classic at the Arrowhead Country Club.

The Tritons began the day in a three-way tie for fifth place following an opening round 298 on Monday, but climbed two spots in the final team standings after carding a 279 in Round 2 and a 291 in Round 3. UCSD wrapped up the tournament with a final tally of 28-over par, 868 on the par-70, 6,537-yard layout.

The 279 and 291 on Tuesday were the Tritons' two lowest rounds in 2011-12.

"We had a really great tournament," head coach Mike Wydra said. "Considering the weather on Monday, I thought we played extremely well and we had several great individual performances, so we're very pleased."

UCSD's performance in San Bernardino was especially impressive considering the blustery conditions for much of the day on Monday. Round 2 was suspended due to rain and impending darkness and had to be finished Tuesday morning. Despite the break in the action, the Tritons still managed to card the second-best round of the tournament, with their 279 trailing only Chico State's third round 276.

Sophomore Lewis Simon was UCSD's top individual finisher, posting a final score of +3, 213 on the challenging Arrowhead Country Club course. Simon got better as the tournament went along, carding rounds of 75, 70 and 68 to finish in a three-way tie for fourth place overall.

Sophomore Jacob Williams was the Tritons' next-highest finisher, posting rounds of 77, 66 and 73 to wrap up at +6 overall. His 216 was good enough for a share of 10th place and his 66 in Round 2 was the lowest round by any player during the competition.

Williams finished one stroke in front of teammate Marc Herrmann, who shot back-to-back 72s after an opening round 73. Herrmann, who had the course abuzz after dropping a hole in one on the par-3, 213-yard No. 12 in Round 2, finished tied for 17th overall at +7, 217.

Fellow rookie Austin Shuxiao rounded out the scoring for UCSD, finishing with a share of 37th place at +14, 224. He carded rounds 75, 71 and 78.

Chico State, which held a six-shot lead over Grand Canyon after the first round, ran away with the team title at +5, 845 (285-284-276). The Wildcats finished 19 strokes in front of GCU, which finished in second place at +24, 864 (291-293-280). The Antelopes held off UCSD by a mere four strokes.

Individual medalist honors went to Chico State's Kyle Souza, who shot a 68 and 67 on Tuesday to wrap up the tournament at -5, 205. Jeremy Sanders of the University of Redlands and Kyle Chappell of Dixie State finished tied for second at +1, 211.

Wydra and the Tritons will now host the 62nd Annual Southern California Intercollegiate Championship March 12-13 at the Mission Viejo Country Club.
