LA JOLLA, Calif.- After winning five consecutive rounds to reach the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships consolation bracket semifinal match on Sunday, Tritons Austin West and Devon Sousa were defeated by LMU's Nicholas Bjerke and Sebastian Bustamante, 6-3, 6-4.
UCSD's Sam Ling and Mark Meyer faced Bjerke and Bustamante earlier in the tournament, falling, 6-1, 6-2, to the LMU duo in the round of 32.
West and Sousa's only other loss of the tournament occurred in the main draw's first round, where they fell to independent entrants Scott Kintz and Scott Lippit, 7-5, 7-6(9). West and Sousa were consequently sent to the consolation bracket, where they sailed through five straight rounds with one bye, two walkovers, and two two-set victories.
Bjerke and Bustamante went on to lose in the consolation bracket championship to UC Berkeley's Christoffer Konigsfeldt and Nicholas Andrews, 7-5, 6-2.
Tritons Chapman Chan/Max Jiganti, Sam Ling/Mark Meyer, Junya Yoshida/Jason Wall, and head coach Eric Steidlmayer also competed in the tournament. Pairs Chan/Jiganti and Steidlmayer/partner Michael Meyer reached the second round of the main draw, while duos Yoshida/Wall and Ling/Meyer reached the consolation bracket round of 32.
The UCSD men's tennis team will return to action Tuesday, Mar. 6 against Villanova at the Northview Tennis Courts.
