LOS ANGELES - The No. 20 UC San Diego women's water polo team fell to No. 7 Loyola Marymount 15-7 behind six goals by Kimberly Benedetti in Western Water Polo Association play on Saturday afternoon at Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center.
The Tritons drop to 10-9 overall and 4-2 in WWPA play on the year. LMU remains perfect at 3-0 in league and 7-7 overall.
Sarah Lizotte and Allison Delgado led the Tritons with a pair of scores while Kirsten Bates, Emily McPhee and Melissa Bartow each pitched-in with a goal.
LMU was buoyed by Benedetti's six scores, as will as a 15-save performance by goalkeeper Elise Ponce. LMU converted 8-of-13 opportunities in 6-on-5 situations while UCSD was only able to convert 1-of-7 man-up situations.
The teams traded goals to open the game before the Lions scored back-to-back to take a 3-1 lead at the 4:36 mark. Bartow answered the next time down the pool and Delgado traded goals with Benedetti to pull UCSD within 4-3 at the end of the first quarter.
However, LMU limited UCSD to just a single goal in each of the second and third quarters while outscoring the Tritons 7-2 to take an 11-5 lead into the final stanza.
Lizotte's second goal of the day kept the Tritons within six at the 6:13 mark, but the Lions rallied for three consecutive goals to take a 15-6 lead. McPhee scored UCSD's lone 6-on-5 goal with 2:17 left in the game.
UCSD returns to San Diego to play in the Aztec Invitational next Saturday and Sunday, March 17 and 18, at San Diego State. The Tritons face Indiana and Princeton on Saturday before bouts against Hawaii and Bucknell on Sunday.
