SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's crew team posted an impressive performance Friday, sweeping all three boat categories against squads from Gonzaga and University of San Diego in Mission Bay.
UCSD's varsity eight recorded a time of 6:01.09, getting a quick start off the line. The Bulldog and Torero boats started closing in halfway through, but the Tritons found new wind with a third of the race left, powering through for a first place finish. Gonzaga came in second with a time of 6:03.11, and the Toreros finished third at 6:05.80. This is the third consecutive year the Tritons have placed first in the contest.
"We had a good day," said Triton head coach Zach Johnson. "Varsity got out early and with pressure from the other boats, we were able to hang on for the lead."
In the JV eight race, the Tritons got off the line quickly and pulled away from the other squads, sealing their effort with a first place finish. They clocked in at 6:17.30, while USD came in second at 6:24.13, and Gonzaga finished last with a time of 6:30.49.
The Tritons concluded the sweep as their novice eight came in a solid ten seconds before the next finisher, with a time of 6:42.12. Gonzaga finished in 6:52.24, good enough for second, while the Toreros and UCSD "B" boats brought up the rear, crossing the finish line at 6:52.24 and 7:08.15, respectively.
"We'll see Gonzaga again at the [San Diego] Crew Classic, and they'll have their own boats. So we'll really be able to test our speed there," Johnson said.
The Tritons will have two weeks to prepare for the San Diego Crew Classic, scheduled for March 31-April 1 in Mission Bay.
