COLUMBUS, Ohio - UC San Diego's Rose Forcier (foil) and Munira Gesner (sabre) faced the nation's top tier of collegiate fencers in two days of bouts at the NCAA National Championships on Thursday and Friday. Sabrist Gesner recorded the Tritons' lone, albeit notable, win of the tournament on Thursday over Notre Dame's Lian Osier. After seven rounds of tough competition, both Tritons finished twenty-fourth in their respective weapon fields.

Gesner beat the Fighting Irish's Osier by a margin of 5-4 in UCSD's best bout of the contest. Osier is not only a member of the 2011 defending national champion Notre Dame team, but also individually earned All-America honors last year. Notre Dame is currently placed third in the tournament, pending the men's results, and Osier finished eighth in her weapon field. Over two days of bouts, Gesner tallied 41 touches, finishing 24th in sabre.

Junior Rose Forcier was the other Triton to compete in Columbus for the two-day contest, vying for the national champion title in foil. Forcier recorded 23 touches spanning the seven rounds, finishing 24th in her weapon category.

The women's individual category champions were decided today, as Duke's Rebecca Ward won sabre, St. John's Evgeniya Kirpicheva won foil, and Ohio State's Katarzyna Dabrowa won epee. The Ohio State and Princeton teams are currently tied for first place, as the men's competition will take place Saturday and Sunday to determine the champion school.
