LA JOLLA, Calif. - Ranked No. 17 in the nation, the UC San Diego women's volleyball team has been picked to finish third in the 2012 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings by the league's coaches.
No. 3 Cal State San Bernardino, which has won the last six CCAA titles, totaled 115 points and six first-place votes to top the poll. No. 24 Sonoma State, last season's second-place finisher, was second with 113 points and five first-place votes and UCSD followed in third with 95 points, matching its 2011 CCAA placing.
Following the top three in order were Cal State L.A., Chico State, Cal State East Bay, San Francisco State, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Monterey Bay, Cal State Stanislaus, Humboldt State and Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Tritons finished their 2011 campaign with a 22-6 overall record and a 17-5 mark in the league. They qualified for their fifth straight NCAA postseason appearance.
UCSD begins its 2012 season at the Grand Canyon University Invitational in Phoenix, Ariz., Aug. 31 and Sept. 1.
