LOS ANGELES - Day two of the 2012 USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championships began with five members of the UC San Diego men's tennis team vying for a slot in the Round of 8 and concluded with Max Jiganti as the Tritons' lone shot at a singles title.

Jiganti, the No. 6 seed in men's singles, defeated Andrew Meyer of Grand Canyon in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0, to clinch his slot in the Round of 8, where he faced Fresno Pacific's Kirill Sinitsyn, the No. 4 seed. Despite losing to Sinitsyn in the end, Jiganti fought hard throughout his match. After losing the first set, 6-3, Jiganti evened the match at one set apiece with his 6-4, second-set win. Jiganti was eliminated from contention following his 10-7 loss in the third set to Sinitsyn.

Ganesh Alagappan forced a third set in his match against Azusa Pacific's Ben Eger, winning the second set, 6-2, after losing the first set by the same score. However, Eger advanced to the round of 8 after defeating Alagappan, 10-6, in the third and final set.

Horea Porutiu competed against APU's Freddy Wilkins in the Round of 16 but fell to the No. 7 seed, 6-1, 6-3.

Trevor Dell, who upset No. 5-seed Drexler Dy of Sonoma State in three sets on Thursday, faced Amari Sanchez of FPU in the Round of 16 but lost, 6-2, 6-0. In addition, Guy Giubilato took on APU's Jan Meyer and was outscored in both sets with a score of 6-1.

In doubles play, the Tritons lost two matches in the round of eight. Jiganti and Kona Luu were defeated, 8-4, by Yevhen Zakarov and Martin Chojnacki of BYU-Hawaii while Alagappan and Porutiu fell to Wilkins and Gary Yam of Azusa Pacific, 8-6.

The USTA/ITA Regional Championships features some of the best men's and women's student-athletes facing off in every ITA region throughout the country. In the 88 USTA/ITA Regional Championships which are put on nationwide, more than 8,000 student-athletes in NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, as well as junior and community colleges will compete.

The champions of each regional site move on to the ITA National Small College Championships, which will host the eight region champions from NCAA Division II and III in addition to NAIA and junior/community colleges.
