LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Elias Tuma, a former standout relief pitcher on the UC San Diego baseball team, has added yet another academic honor to his expansive haul, earning the West Region Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award for 2011-12 from the NCAA Division II Conference Commissioners Association.
Tuma, who earned his degree in cognitive science this past June with a 3.94 grade-point average, was one of 16 individuals recognized. A male and female Division II Scholar-Athlete of the Year will be selected from the regional winners, eight men and eight women.
A Fremont native, Tuma made a school-record 82 appearances over his four-year Triton career, posting a 2.76 ERA with a 7-3 record and 13 saves.
In the classroom, Tuma was a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-America honoree and the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Male Scholar-Athlete Award recipient for 2011-12.
Sonoma State volleyball player Keala Peterson, a double major in anthropology and psychology (3.96 GPA), gave the CCAA a sweep of the awards for the West.
